The Bonaparte family's ancestral house is Maison Bonaparte. Francesco, the first Bonaparte to emigrate to Corsica, is believed to have begun the family's history in Corsica in the late 15th century in this house.

Eight of Carlo Bonaparte's twelve children survived, and seven of them were born in this house — Joseph, Napoleon, Lucien, Elisa, Louis, Pauline, Caroline, and Jérôme.

As affluent landowners, their income came from the production of wine, oil, grain, fruit, milk, cheese, and meat on their farms and fields, which they used to feed their family and servants. On the French island of Corsica's main street, Saint-Charles is where this residence is situated. This house was famed as Napoleon's birth house. In 1967, the mansion was turned into a national museum.

How to explore Maison Bonaparte?

  • A few images of family homes in the Ajaccio area are displayed in the cellar on the ground floor, along with images of other agricultural tools like millstones, jars, and oil presses.
  • The bedrooms of Madame Mère, the room where Napoleon was born, the gallery, the boudoir, the chamber with the trap door that Napoleon is thought to have used to enter the harbor on October 6, 1799, the dining room, and other rooms for the family are all located on the first floor.
  • The first floor introduces Charles and Letizia in the first chamber, followed by Napoleon, his brothers, and sisters in the second room.
  • The second floor was a historical recreation of Corsica in the 18th century. The 'Chambre de l'Alcôve' is considered to have been Napoleon's room upon his return from Egypt. Another room on this floor is devoted to the Second Empire history of the family and commemorates the journeys of Napoleon III and Eugénie.
