In the southern region of Dumat Al-Jandal, Qasr Marid—also known as Marid Castle—is established on a rocky plateau situated hundreds of meters above sea level. Its ground tower rises over the old town's structures, presenting the city's panorama. The castle Marid is perched on a natural limestone ridge overlooking the valley where the ancient oasis is located. Its location leads one to believe that this was the location of one of Dumat's earliest towns. It dates back to Nabatean times when this city appeared to be the ancient capital.
Several centuries before the advent of Islam, the castle served as a stronghold to keep the region safe from invaders. The first mention was from the third century A.D. when Tayma and Dumat Al-Jandal were invaded by Zenobia, queen of Palmyra. Stories say she was unsuccessful in her attempts to enter the castle.
A gigantic stronghold was described as Dumat Al-Jandal (Marid). Since the fortress used jandal stone for construction, the city was given the name Dumat Al-Jandal. The castle, which was once rectangular but is now oval in shape. It has two main entrances: one is in the south of the building and the other is next to the tower in the north. It has two stories; the first was constructed of stone and the second of mud. Additionally, there are four 12-meter-tall conical towers that were built at various points in time.
Marid Castle has been extensively excavated, both inside and outside, demonstrating that it dates back to the Nabataean era.
