One of the most extensive French regional history museums located outside of Paris is the Musée d'Aquitaine, which can be found in Bordeaux. Before it was converted into a museum, this structure served for a good number of years as the quarters for the department of arts and humanities at Bordeaux University. This museum was opened in 1987 and spanned a total area of 3,000 square meters.

Some of its displays include prehistoric times, Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Black Prince, Montaigne, Tourney, etc. Their presentations have been bolstered with the addition of videos of ambient sounds and other forms of multimedia accompaniment.

How to explore Musée d'Aquitaine?

  • The pediment is adorned with sculptures of renowned individuals who serve as a warm welcome to visitors to the cemetery, the location where some of the most famous Bordelais were laid to rest after their lives.
  • The tomb of the famous author, Michel de Montaigne, is one of the main attractions of the room devoted to 16th-century Bordeaux.
  • On the first level, in the section that is titled 'Bordeaux and Aquitaine from 1715 to the present day,' there is a walkway that is dedicated to the vineyards of the Gironde region, discussing topics such as terroir, grape varietals, diseases of the vine, tooling, and so on. It is an intriguing approach for amateurs to take.
  • Also, discover the space of the 18th century, 'Bordeaux Atlantic trade and slavery.'
  • Another section worth going to is the 19th-century section that displays the interwar period, 'Bordeaux port or gate of the world 1800-1939'.
  • The recent development is the sections dedicated to the 20th and 21st centuries.
